Jaime Lee recently joined Carlota Pico to talk about her career path and her current role as head of content strategy at AdRoll, a one-stop digital marketing and growth marketing platform. Jaime shared her tips on digging into customer data in order to better understand a given audience’s needs, pain points and desired solutions.

Jaime stressed that it’s imperative to understand what value you can offer consumers—especially those who have lost interest and who you want to return. From utilizing Google Analytics and surveys to partnering with other entities that have valuable data and resources, Jaime offers several effective strategies for obtaining customer data.

Rapid-fire recs:

  • Source of inspiration: “I like to extract things that I admire from everyone, everything and every experience, whether it’s from a friend, my mom or my colleagues. I think it’s important to find inspiration in every interaction that you have.”
  • Useful resource: AdRoll’s Unrolling E-commerce podcast. “My teammate Laura Finnerty launched it this year. She’s done an amazing job at pulling it together, interviewing almost a hundred brands and getting inspiring insights from marketers.”
  • Favorite app: Sloth. “I’m a huge fan of productivity hacks, and what Sloth allows me to do is segment my day, set my priorities and time each activity. It really helps me focus on what needs to be done instead of wasting time.”

I think what direct-to-consumer brands do really well is the conversational piece, and the more customer-centric angle: ‘What are the challenges that they’re actually facing?’ Not: ‘What are we selling?’ It’s about moving beyond your role as an employee and thinking about the challenges that you’re helping people solve.
